Sports Injuries

The very nature of sport is to push the body to ever-greater usage; from this it is easy to see why sports injuries occur. The pressure to increase the weight, increase the speed or increase the number of repetitions is a natural process in trying to train the body to ever-greater endeavour. Mismanagement of that progress (increasing weight or increasing repetitions too fast) is often the cause of sports related injuries, however the accidents that occur in competitive sport are also a factor.

Those people who train, or play sport regularly will probably use their own expertise to solve minor injury problems, stretching, massage, medication or cold packs for example. For those problems that are outside of the scope of the average athlete then they may well turn for professional help in the form of remedial Sports Therapists, Physiotherapists, Chiropractors or Musculoskeletal Therapists. A person attending a GP may well be offered medication and possibly an appointment with a Physiotherapist, as these are the manual therapists most often used by the National Health Service, although there are many Physiotherapists in private practice. Chiropractors are often thought of as “manipulative therapists” mainly dealing with back pain. Musculoskeletal Therapists are also thought of as working on neck pain and back pain as ”manipulative therapists” but also have wide experience in general muscle and joint related problems and so are an excellent source of treatment for sports injuries.

The medical training of an Musculoskeletal Therapist is extensive and they are trained to diagnose and identify injuries that are outside of their scope of expertise; for example fractures where hospital treatment is advisable. However, well within their scope of treatment are muscles strains and tears, ligament strains, joint capsule strains, bruising, haematoma, and common injuries such as sprained ankles etc. although neck pain and back pain are often amongst the catalogue of sports injuries.

Certain sports tend to generate specific types of injuries, for example footballers typically have foot and knee problems; tennis players, shoulder and arm injuries whereas rugby players will often have injuries to legs and shoulders and martial arts can generate finger and toe injuries. Of course any sport under the right circumstances can result in any of the above injuries.

As well as standard Musculoskeletal Therapistic techniques this practice also uses Ultrasound, Electrotherapy and Acupuncture to aid quick relief from pain and restoration of full functionality.

Work related injuries

There are many forms of industrial injury that can vary from Repetitive Strain Injury (RSI) to serious injuries involving damage to or loss of limbs. RSI can result from overuse of a keyboard when typing or from rapid, multiple use of particular kinds of equipment. Serious injury is often related to persons falling, failing to use safety equipment, unsecured ladders and platforms but there are many possibilities for the unwary.

Also included in work-related injuries can be those from the vast number of people who drive for a living. Road traffic accidents (RTA) can arise through many causes: inattention by the driver, or other road users, excess speed, carelessness in fact the list is extensive. Common injuries involve impact to the knees and arms, forceful restraint by the seat belt, contact with airbags and one of the major sources of injury in a vehicle that of whiplash injury.

Treatment for these injuries is often covered by an insurance claim where the person being treated claims for their treatment from some insurance scheme with no cost to themselves. An experienced Musculoskeletal Therapist will be recognised by most insurance companies and therefore be able to claim for their fees direct from the company.

With more violent injury the body absorbs the energy that causes the damage and the Musculoskeletal Therapistic treatments help the orderly release of the energy to restore normal function.

As well as standard Musculoskeletal Therapistic techniques this practice also uses Ultrasound, Electrotherapy and Acupuncture to aid quick relief from pain and restoration of full functionality.
